How to Come Up With Life Goals

You can learn how to come up with life goals by using the standards for a SMART Goal?  What is a SMART Goal?  SMART is an acronym that stands for all the criteria you need to include, when defining and setting your goals to make sure you accomplish each.  This is a way for you to thoroughly decide on a goal and plan to achieve it for getting closer to the dream you have for your life.  The abbreviation SMART stands for:

S - Specific
M - Measurable
A - Achievable
R - Relevant
T - Timely

Specific - Make Your Goals Specific

Be very clear about what you want to accomplish.  In order for you to achieve a goal, you must be very clear about what you want for your life.  In being specific it helps you to focus your efforts and clearly define what you need to do.

Begin by clearly defining:

WHAT
do you want to ultimately accomplish?
HOW are you going to accomplish it?

Measurable - Make Your Goals Measurable

Determine how you will gauge and track your progress from start to finish.  It is crucial to be able to track your progress when working towards a goal.  Measuring a goal helps you to manage and track it.  This helps you to stay motivated as you reach your goals by the date you set and gets you excited about how well you are progressing.  Depending on your goal remember to include exacts; like amounts, dates, distance, etc. in order to control the degree of success you are seeking.

Achievable - Make Your Goals Achievable

Make sure it is challenging, but realistic.  It should be a goal that you will be able to achieve.  Setting goals that you will more and likely not reach can be discouraging and you will probably not follow through.  Set a goal that stretches you slightly, which you are confident that you can stay committed in achieving it.

Relevant - Make Your Goals Relevant

Decide if the goal agrees with your core values and what you want for your life.  Determine if this is a goal you REALLY want.  Your goals should be relevant to what you REALLY want for your life and not what someone else wants.  Keeping the goals aligned with your values, talents, and desires will help you to stay focused and accomplish what you want.  Achieving relevant goals is what helps us to live a harmonious life and brings us fulfillment.

Remember that the goals should be realistic for where you are at the time.

Timely - Make Your Goals Timely

Assign a date for when you want to accomplish your goal.  Setting a date gives you a sense of urgency and a clear target in working towards your goal.  Not setting a date makes your goal vague, because you may feel that you can start it at any time.  Setting deadlines help you to get things done.  Think about it.  If you do not set deadlines you tend to not have a significant reason or motivation to start your goals, not to mention achieving them.

Remember that TIME must be measurable, attainable, and realistic.
